White Elves

The White Elves are elves at their most noble, morally upright and fair; humanoids who look into the future. They are one of the most ancient and advanced races in Amistade and the universe’s history.

The White Elves, despite their long history, are not true natives to Amistade. They came to Amistade from the realm of Faerie twenty-five millennia ago, passing through fey crossroads and backroads.

To bring peace and law back to Amistade the White Elves possess an army of unequaled skill to fend off their many enemies. To this end, all White Elves are taught the arts of war from an early age and swiftly master the sword, spear and bow. This strict policy of service means that White Elves can quickly boast the ranks of their armies far larger than their population would suggest.

These citizen soldiers form the core of White Elves armies—expertly trained warriors, resplendent in white robes and shining armor. Those of noble birth are taught to bear the arms of the Silver Helms, the magnificent Elven knights who fight in the vanguard of the White Elf army. Cavalrymen almost without peer, they are renowned for crashing through enemy shield walls, their sharp lances striking down their foes.

Personality: White Elves are more often amused than excited, and more likely to be curious than greedy. With such a long life span, they tend to keep a broad perspective on events, remaining aloof and unfazed by petty happenstance. When pursuing a goal, however, whether an adventurous mission or learning a new skill or art, they can be focused and relentless. They are slow to make friends and enemies, and even slower to forget them. They reply to petty insults with disdain and to serious insults with vengeance.

White Elves are deliberate, patient, and solemn, and their society reflects this. Their art, poetry, and songs also reflect their deliberate and regal attitudes. They prefer tales of ancient battles, songs of the gods, and stories of great heroes beset with terrible tragedies.

White Elves revere wisdom and learning. Even the humblest sun elf abode features a room or two filled with old scrolls, maps, and books. White Elves have a strong tradition of rule by nobility, and most White Elf communities are ruled by a monarch who can trace his or her line back to the First Crown War. Where a human noble measures his power by the expanse of the lands under his rule and the numbers of soldiers at his command, a White Elf noble is known by the honor of their family name, the magical power and lore their family has accumulated, and the wealth and beauty of their home.

White Elves bring their finely honed aesthetic not only to martial prowess, but to the very arms and armor they use. All White Elf weaponry and accoutrements of war are meticulously and elegantly crafted. Swords are often passed down from father to son and may be ancient family heirlooms that have drawn blood in thousands of battles. The armor worn by White Elves is beautifully fashioned from tiny metal scales making it lightweight and flexible, allowing the wearer to maintain their natural swiftness and agility. White Elves decorate their armor and weapons, making each a fantastic work of art. Their tall, shapely helms glitter in the sunlight and are often intricately carved and encrusted with precious gems.

Magic: The White Elves have developed sorcery far beyond the accomplishments of any other race. They were the first to study magic and remain the greatest masters of it in the known world. Through magic, the White Elves protect their lands and people. White Elf mages are mighty spell casters whose fiery blasts and awesome energies have won many a battle. It is the Elves who in years past taught magic to men, although White Elf mages far surpass human mages.

The pinnacle of White Elf knowledge is elven high magic, spells that can ward an entire city against evil, conceal an invading army, or cause a forest to grow up overnight. Such magic is not without its risks, a fact that the White Elves are keenly aware of since the fall of man. While the White Elves still remember the secrets of high magic, they refuse to share such knowledge and are hesitant to use such power themselves beyond the borders of Petra.

White Elves have another key advantage—an unparalleled collection of spellbooks, laboratory notes, and other accumulated lore. For five thousand years, the White Elves have been practicing magic, and their libraries are full of magic secrets too numerous to properly catalog.

Physical Description: White Elves are short and slim, standing about 4-1/2 to 5-1/2 feet tall and typically weighing 95 to 135 pounds, with White Elf men the same height as and only marginally heavier than White Elf women. White Elves have pale skin, hair of golden blond, copper or black, and eyes of blue, green or gold. Elves have no facial or body hair.

White Elves dress in clothing that is at the same time magnificent and understated, favoring cool colors such as blue and green. They decorate their clothes with intricate gold- or mithral-thread embroidery in exacting patterns whose subtle designs are easy to miss at first. Jewelry is simple but painstakingly crafted. Elves possess unearthly grace and fine features. Many humans and members of other races find them hauntingly beautiful. An elf reaches adulthood at about 50 years of age and can live to be more than 250 years old.

Elves do not sleep, as members of the other common races do. Instead, an elf meditates in a deep trance for 4 hours a day. An elf resting in this fashion gains the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep. While meditating, an elf dreams, though these dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of practice. The Common word for an elf’s meditation is “trance,” as in “four hours of trance.

White Elves cannot interbreed with humans.

Relations: White Elves admire the Brown Elves and feel that they embody the elven spirit of nature. Relations are good between White Elves and Brown Elves, although the reclusive nature of the Brown Elves makes direct contact rare.

White Elves are the most tolerant of other races.

They travel extensively, and a White Elf can expect to interact with hundreds of different races throughout their life. White Elves find the diversity of Amistade’s races to be intoxicating and forever surprising, and they especially value the insights of other races because they often think of things no elf would ever consider. This openness and willingness to accept new ideas is regarded as foolish and dangerous by other races.

Despite their open minds, White Elves have little patience or interest in the various evil beings, and they hold beastmen, centaurs, orcs, orpheum and gnolls in particular contempt. They avoid regions where such cultures hold sway, although moon elf adventurers often infiltrate these areas to spy on them.

Alignment: Since elves love freedom, variety, and self-expression. They lean strongly toward the gentler aspects of chaos. Generally, they value and protect others’ freedom as well as their own, and they are more often good than not.

White Elf Lands: White Elves are deliberate, patient, and solemn, and their society reflects this. Their buildings, while aesthetically beautiful and architecturally brilliant. Their art, poetry and songs also reflect their deliberate and regal attitudes. They prefer tales of ancient battles, songs of the gods, and stories of great heroes beset with terrible tragedies.

Religion: Religion infuses every aspect of White Elf society. White Elves believe themselves to be the chosen representatives to restore balance and bring light and law to the mortal realm, and are quick to offer prayers of thanks to their deities. They worship Aliwon as their patron.

The White Elf devotion to magic, skill at arms, and the superiority of elven civilization means that they have a great and abiding veneration for the leader of the elven pantheon. Like their own nobles, Aliwon is a wise, generous, and firm leader who brings forth beauty in the world, then defends his work resolutely.

Clerics of the church of Aliwon advise the rulers of White Elf communities, and Aiwon’s clerics form the heart of a White Elf army when the White Elves must take the field to defend their lands.

White Elves also venerate Braun Wynn. While Aliwon is seen as the divine leader and protector of the White Elves, Braun Wynn is revered as a counselor and advisor, a source of wisdom in time of “The Fall.”

Clerics of Braun Wynn are charged with the keeping of knowledge and records among the White Elves.

Language: Elves speak a fluid language of subtle intonations and intricate grammar. While Elven literature is rich and varied, it is the language’s songs and poems that are most famous. Many bards learn Elven so they can add Elven ballads to their repertoires. Others simply memorize Elven songs by sound. The Elven script, as flowing as the spoken word, also serves as the script for Sylvan, the language of dryads and pixies, for Aquan, the language of water-based creatures, Imperium the language of the Abotchee and Kalish, along with Undercommon the language of subterranean creatures.
